The Ross family, Kirk, Nancy and Keith, visit with Paulie Papavassiliou an invited speaker at the third International Mosaic Down Syndrome Association conference held at VCU during the summer of 2007. Many additional students were involved in the conference including Martha Thomas, a genetic counseling student, who organized the childcare and children’s activities at the conference.

Second year genetic counseling students Jessica Waxman, Martha Thomas, Stephanie Kozachek, Nora Alexander, Dagny Patton and Dr. Joann Bodurtha are on hand at the Science Museum of Virginia Scooper Bowl Event to dispense genetic advice on brain freeze and lactose intolerance. This “All the Ice Cream You Can Eat” event brings together a variety of activities for families and children to learn about science including a fun introduction to genetics and family health history.

An Arab style celebration for the Shiang lab was in order when Sami Amr passed his comprehensive exams. A traditional feast of lamb, rice, yogurt, salad and dessert was made by Cedars Restaurant for the event. In 2004, the Surgeon General declared Thanksgiving Family Health history day. In 2007 a Department project in conjunction with Leadership Metro Richmond, the Governor and Henrico County have declared November family health history month. Heather Creswick has coordinated many of these efforts including setting up the display case on the first floor of Main Hospital for November. Included in the display is the winning poster that was submitted as part of a high school poster contest on Family Health History. Veronica Kirkland and Jia Yan also contributed to the display.
